Unlimited Space & Bandwidth - Marketing Traps

Website & Internet  No Comments

Cyber Coral Network posted a good advice for webmasters who wanted to buy web hosting services. It has explanations of why you should NOT choose a hosting provider that include unlimited space or unlimited bandwidth in their hosting package as such things don’t even exist.

Sad but true … I’m sure many many webmasters / customers have been trapped with such offers because people really want unlimited in almost everything in their hosting package as cheap as possible …

Sometime you have to see from the hosting provider’s point of view … The cost to maintain the server, internet connection, etc … It’s not cheap … really …

How to Optimize Gallery2

Tips & Tricks, Website & Internet  2 Comments

I installed the full package of Gallery2 last monday and got all the modules activated. I found out that my gallery was very very very slow :(

Today, I have disabled and deleted some unnecessary modules out of my gallery and it loads a lot faster than before. If you downloaded the full package, you don’t need all the modules in there. Make sure you only upload the necessary modules.

For me, I only use the following modules which I think necessary for my gallery:

  • Captcha - can help to prevent spam comments by bots.
  • URL Rewrite - usefull for friendly url for search engine, but only works with Apache.
  • Gd graphic toolkit - on the fly photo manipulation
  • Image Block - to show random, most viewed, or most recent photo outside your gallery.
  • Sitemap - can help to create sitemap for Google crawlers.
  • Comments - to give visitors the ability to post comments on albums or photos.

You can also enable some additional modules like ImageFrame, Slideshow & Watermark to add more feature into your gallery.

Playing Around with My Gallery

Website & Internet  1 Comment

For the last three days, I’ve been playing around with My Gallery :) Tweak here and there, uploaded some photos, playing around with SEO for my photos, etc … etc …

My first consideration was to create an account on flickr and host my photos there. After I created my account, I saw a link about limitation for free accounts on flickr. I quickly changed my mind as I don’t want such limitation as that can bring trouble in the future if I got many photos.

After that I stumbledupon picasaweb which offer 250MB free photo hosting. But then again I was dissapointed because users need to have google account in order to give comments on my photos.

Why did I not use my hosting to host my photos? Simply because I could not find a good php script for gallery to manage all my photos. But I was wrong. I found a nice php script for my photo gallery - Gallery2. I am now happy with the script and finally host my photos on my own domain & hosting provider :)

Custom Made Website vs Blog - part 1

Information Technology, Website & Internet  No Comments

I started my own custom made website since the last 2 or 3 years. Spent my time in building a website for my own that can suit the need of my cyber island :p

I started my website with just simple HTML and moving towards with Server Side Scripting using ASP.NET with VB.NET. To be honest, I was a complete newbie in web programming stuff. I did some programming when I was in college, but not web application.

I learnt enough, but not much :">, about dot Net, database for web application, cookies, web security and many more. I really enjoyed making my website because programming logic is one of good excercises for our brain.

I remember, there was a time when someone from local IT services and training institution saw my website which was made using ASP.NET contacted me for an interview. He offered me a chance as a dot Net instructor in one of their training class.
