Some of you may have experienced “Unmountable Boot Volume” blue screen error message when Windows XP first start up. The error occurs usually because windows did not shut down properly.

To resolve the problem you simply need to run scandisk or chkdsk command. But since windows unable to load properly, you will need another computer and connect the HDD as a slave or you can use BartPE – Windows XP Live on CD.

After you got BartPE up and running, open Command Prompt and type chkdsk c: /r. That command will check the C drive and also fix errors and locate bad sectors.

After completed running the chkdsk command, you may restart your computer and boot from your HDD.

Please note that if chkdsk found bad sectors in your HDD, it will try to recover the files but will not be able to permanently fix bad sectors. I strongly recommend you to immediately buy a new HDD and copy all your files.

Bad sectors are not repairable. Eventhough someone claimed that he can repair bad sectors, it still doesn’t worth it. Your data are more valuable than a cheap harddrive, unless off course if you don’t have any important data then you don’t have anything to worry about.

Who doesn’t know Friendster? Everyone knows Friendster and some people even got addicted with it. Friendster is a good media for social networking. It helps us stay connected with friends, families or even celebrity fans club.

That’s not just it. Friendster also has other features such as picture gallery, private message, bulletin board, your friends’ birthday reminder and even blog for your personal website or online diary.

And sometime, people often use Friendster’s private message facility to send message to friends instead of sending the message directly via email.

Let’s get to the point then. Why you should NOT depend on Friendster too much.

I don’t know whether you realized it or not. Friendster is one of websites that’s blocked by some company proxy because it’s not a business related site and therefore does not worth visiting.

What does it mean? It means that if your friends work for a company with strict control of their internet traffic, 99% chance they will not be able to visit Friendster.

That means if you use Friendster to send message to your friends, they won’t be able to read your messages.

That means if you use Friendster to share your picture gallery, your friends can’t see it.

That means if you use Friendster for your blog or personal website, your friends can not visit your blog.

That means your friends will have to go back home or cyber café to read your message, see your gallery or visit your blog.

However, there are solutions:

For sending messages to friends, use your email.

For picture gallery, you can sign up with some free gallery hoster such as flickr or picasaweb.

For your blog, you can sign up with blogspot or wordpress.

I am writing this not because I don’t like / hate Friendster, but I just want to let people know that not everyone can surf Friendster’s website because of their company internet policy.

Today, I have disabled and deleted some unnecessary modules out of my gallery and it loads a lot faster than before. If you downloaded the full package, you don’t need all the modules in there. Make sure you only upload the necessary modules.

For me, I only use the following modules which I think necessary for my gallery:

Captcha – can help to prevent spam comments by bots.

URL Rewrite – usefull for friendly url for search engine, but only works with Apache.

Gd graphic toolkit – on the fly photo manipulation

Image Block – to show random, most viewed, or most recent photo outside your gallery.

Sitemap – can help to create sitemap for Google crawlers.

Comments – to give visitors the ability to post comments on albums or photos.

You can also enable some additional modules like ImageFrame, Slideshow & Watermark to add more feature into your gallery.

Boot the computer with a bootable CD or floppy that can read and write the C:\ drive. I recommend you to use BartPE as it’s a very easy and usefull tool to fix windows offline.

Download NTLDR is Missing.zip, extract and save the 3 files into your C:\ drive.

You may need to modify the boot.ini file to fit your need. 99% chance you won’t need to change it

Restart your computer … and Done

Tips:
You can also use Windows XP bootable CD and then select Repair and use the Recovery Console to copy the 3 files (ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini) back to your C:\

However, Recovery Console will ask you the Administrator’s password before you can get inside it. Don’t worry in case you need help with the password, you can read How to Reset Windows XP Administrator Password for help

Forgot your NT admin password? Reinstall? Oh no… Not any more…

Overview

This is a utility to (re)set the password of any user that has a valid (local) account on your NT system.

You do not need to know the old password to set a new one.

It works offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a floppydisk or CD. The bootdisk includes stuff to access NTFS and FAT/FAT32 partitions and scripts to glue the whole thing together.

Will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts!

It is also an almost fully functional registry editor!

Why
NT stores its user information, including crypted versions of the passwords, in a file called ’sam’, usually found in \winnt\system32\config. This file is a part of the registry, in a binary format previously undocumented, and not easily accessible. But thanks to a German(?) named B.D, I’ve now made a program that understands the registry. As far as I know, Microsoft provides no way of changing the password if you cannot log in as someone with appropriate privileges, except restoring the registry files from the rescuefloppy.

You don’t forget passwords?

You never get boxes to admin when someone quits suddenly?

Your vendor delivers a preconfigured system to you, but never have “freak” accidents and lose the password they’ve set on it?

If so, what are you doing reading this?? Go read propaganda from your favourite software vendor instead.

Graeme K. Le Roux, 1-Jul-2002

Some twenty years ago, I came across a report which estimated that 20% of system users chose really stupid passwords. Fast forward to the present, and it seems that nothing much has changed.

A recent conversation about basic security issues with a group of system and network administrators confirmed my suspicions. Even system administrators, it seems, are likely to choose stupid passwords.

Don’t believe me? Try getting hold of a freeware SNMP utility, use it to do a trace route to find the addresses of some of the routers on your network, and then try using the SNMP utility with the password “public”— i.e. the SNMP default.

Even if someone has changed the write password, I’ll bet that you will still be able to read the unit’s configuration by supplying “public” as the read password. And being able to read a router’s configuration can be very helpful to the average hacker.

Service names under Windows have no default other than running under the system login, but when a service establishes an account for itself as part of an automated install, the password it uses is probably going to be some predictable variation on the product’s or manufacturer’s name.

This is very helpful to a hacker who wants to plant a malicious service on a host; all they have to do is itemise the accounts on the system, load their software and wait for, or provoke, a reboot. Having a usable service account saves them all the trouble of creating one and having to hide it.

Of course a hacker has to get into your system before they can do any mischief and that requires hijacking a user account. And it is easy to do so when one in five system users is likely to have a really stupid password.

What’s stupid?
For me, a “really stupid” password is some variation on the user’s name, a relative’s name or some significant date. Almost as bad is picking a character name or phrase from a popular movie or book.

When Star Wars was released I found a number of “skywalker” passwords, “Illbeback” was popular when the Terminator films were shown and then there was the known trekkie whose password was ”klingon”. The same problems occur with sporting club’s and sports star’s names, club mottos and phrases from club songs, etc. Popular songs are another source of guessable passwords.

So is a good password something that’s really complex? No, because it’s no use having a password that the user can’t remember easily. So system administrators beware: if you try to force your users to use a complex password, then they are going to write it down.

I was once involved in a security assessment for a large client who proudly told me that they forced users to use 12 characters alpha-numeric passwords which were changed every two weeks. The IT department generated these passwords and kept a record of them in case a user lost their password.

When we did an after-hour walk around the client’s head office, we found that roughly one user in three had a post-it note with the current password written on it stuck to their terminal or PC–and the worst offenders were senior management.

Yes, such passwords are hard to crack, but from a user’s perspective they are almost impossible to remember and nobody likes to get chewed on for forgetting a password, so it’s no wonder people wrote passwords down.

I personally think that good and practical passwords are case-sensitive alpha-numeric representations of phrases.

One good one I came across some years ago was “I4gotit”. Another was “3BeeOrNot2B” (it may be abusing Shakespeare’s work, but it is a good password). The point about both these passwords is that they are easy to remember and hard to crack—and that is the basis of password security.

Google AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant Google ads on their website’s content pages and earn money. Because the ads are related to what your visitors are looking for on your site — or matched to the characteristics and interests of the visitors your content attracts — you’ll finally have a way to both monetize and enhance your content pages.

It’s also a way for website publishers to provide Google web and site search to their visitors, and to earn money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages.

You can maximize your revenue potential by displaying Google ads on your website. Google puts relevant CPC (cost-per-click) and CPM (cost per thousand impressions) ads through the same auction, and lets them compete against one another. The auction takes place instantaneously, and, when it’s over, AdSense automatically displays the text or image ad(s) that will generate the maximum revenue for a page — and the maximum revenue for you.
