Blogger vs Bloger

English  5 Comments

Scholarships CenterBefore the decision of using blogger.batam.web.id as the domain for Batam Bloggers Directory, there was a little debate between Hasanul, Geblek and Husein regarding “Blogger vs Bloger” here & here. I will not express my comment in those two conversations as I think I will be a little bit out of date (basi). Instead I will make a posting here on my own blog, at least a bit traffic for me … hehehe …

For me, the correct word to be used is Blogger with double G. Why?

Let me flash back our memory to our English lesson when we were at the Junior High School (or maybe lesson for Elementary School now). We can take the decision by looking at the word pattern, Consonants & Vowels. If you want to add Suffix (-ing, -ed or -er) to words that have the ending pattern of CVC (consonant - vowel - consonant) or CCVC (consonant - consonant - vowel - consonant) then we must double the latest consonant.

Example of words with CVC or CCVC pattern at the end:

  • log -> logging, logged or logger
  • blog -> blogging, blogged or blogger
  • clip -> clipping, clipped or clipper
  • kidnap -> kidnapping, kidnapped or kidnapper

Example of words without CVC or CCVC pattern at the end:

  • rock (CVCC) -> rocker (without doubling the last K)
  • sing (CVCC) -> singing or singer (without doubling the last G)
  • eat (VVC) -> eating (without doubling the last T)
  • watch (CVCCC) -> watching (without doubling the last H)

Now you know why you should use blogger with double G instead of bloger.

Thanks to lupinworks.com for reminding me this lesson and please CMIIW as English is not my mother tongue :p
